The Business Capital of Bangladesh

Chattogram is the Business Capital of Bangladesh, situated in southeastern part of the country. This divisional city is the biggest seaport of Bangladesh and is on the banks of the Karnaphuli River on the Bay of Bengal. Around 5 million inhabitants in an area of 157 sq. km. (approx.) make Chattogram the second largest metropolis in the country.

A trading post since the 9th century, Chattogram has a multicultural and multi-ethnic heritage of Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Modern Chattogram developed in the early 20th century under British colonial rule. On the time of World War II, Chattogram was an important military base and supply point for Allied Forces in South Asia.

Today, Chattogram is one of the fastest growing city in the world. The prime commercial and industrial centre of Bangladesh, the city also has globally competitive special economic zones like Chattogram Export Processing Zone (CEPZ), Karnaphuli Export Processing Zone (KEPZ), Korean Export Processing Zone besides Kalurghat Industrial Area & Patenga Industrial Areas.

The city of Chattogram is a major tourist attraction in Bangladesh. Its green hills and forests, its broad sandy beaches and its fine cool climate always attract the holiday-markers. Described by the Chinese traveler poet, Huen Tsang (7th century AD) as "sleeping beauty emerging from mists and water" and given the title of "Porto Grande" by the 16th century Portuguese seafarers. Chattogram is filled with dense green forests, endless rolling hills, a moderate climate and breathtaking beaches. Since the 7th century, Chattogram has been mentioned in many documents as a seaport of mystical beauty and magnificent charm. The bustling harbor stands in stark contrast to the tranquility and peaceful surroundings of the city.

Patenga Beach: Patenga Beach lies in the western part of the city and close to Shah Amanat International Airport and the BNS Isha Khan Naval Base & the Chattogram Port. It is located at the mouth of 'Karnaphuli' river and stretches to the Bay of Bengal, which ensures a constant influx of travelers and visitors from home and abroad.

Foy's Lake: Foy's Lake was dug in 1924 by Assam-Bengal Railway and named after the English engineer Mr. Foy. The Lake is next to Batali Hill, the highest hill in Chattogram Metropolitan area. Foy’s Lake now turned as the biggest amusement and water theme park in the city with its magnificent view, ferries wheel, hilly walkways, greeneries, boat rides, water games and many other rides, attractions & scenic restaurants. The Chattogram Zoo is next door.

Heritage Park: There is a heritage park, also known as ‘Mini Bangladesh’, which reflects the most notable structures and instances of Bangladesh, a miniature museum. A 71-metre tower of Mini Bangladesh has a revolving restaurant on the top that rotates once every 90 minutes.

Ethnological Museum: The Chattogram Ethnological Museum located in the bustling commercial street of Agrabad, country’s lone ethnological museum established in 1965, offers the visitors the chance to acquaint with the lifestyles and heritage of various ethnic groups of the country.
