Barisal Venice of the East

Divisional city Barisal is the biggest river port in Bangladesh. Situated on the Kirtankhola river and on the northern shore of the Bay of Bengal in southern part of Bangladesh. Barisal is the central city of this region with a divisional headquarters, medical college, Cadet College, some pharmaceutical and textile industries and the Inland Water Transport Authority's head office.

Barisal is the rice producing center of Bangladesh. Balam (a kind of basmati) is the most popular rice in Barisal. It is also famous for Betel Leaf, a typical south Asian chewing item. As Barisal is surrounded by river so fish is plenty in there. Coconut and Hog Plum are very famous fruit of Barisal.

And the best attraction of Barisal is Kuakata sea beach. Kuakata is a panaromic sea beach on the southernmost tip of Bangladesh. Located in the Patuakhali district, Kuakata has a wide sandy beach from where one can see both the sunrise and sunset. The name Kuakata originated from the word 'Kua'-the Bengali word for “Well” which was dug on the sea shore by the early Rakhine settlers in quest of collecting drinking water, who landed on Kuakata coast in the eighteenth century after being expelled from Arakan (Myanmar) by the Mughals. Afterwards, it has become a tradition of digging Well in the neighborhoods of Rakhaine tribes for water.

Kuakata offers a full view of the sunrise and sunset from the same white sandy beach in the water of the Bay of Bengal.
